He sinks deeper into the tub, and he’s ready. Any minute now, he’s bound to fall asleep and have some sort of epiphany disguised as a childhood memory. Isaka sighs and leans his head back and waits for the inevitable, for sleep to come crawling in and claim him and make him remember things that he thought he’s forgotten.

But it never comes.

Instead he falls into a sleep filled with blurred faces (or just a face?) that look familiar and abstract smiles and dots of green. When he wakes up, he’s not half drowning but his head’s thrown back against the edge and his neck’s starting to hurt.

When he gets out, his phone starts to ring. “Hello,” Isaka answers while drying his hair with a towel around his waist.

“Ryuuichirou-sama.”

Isaka stills and lets out an earth shattering laugh. “Hey there, Asahina, missed me already?”

He can hear Asahina breathing on the other side. “I have to make sure you don’t accidentally drown.”

Isaka smiles, and it’s this. He isn’t going to admit whatever this feeling is that settles somewhere in the bottom of his stomach, but he stays quiet and maybe breathes a little deeper and quieter to hear better.

Moments pass, and neither of them say anything. At least they have this. Asahina’s busy with being the perfect secretary and he’s busy being a great man. How long has it exactly been since they’ve last seen each other? A week or a week and a half?

“Hey,” Asahina says, breaking the silence.

“Mmnm?” Isaka says into the phone. He leans against the wall and stares idly at the ceiling.

“Ah, good, I thought you had choked yourself with a towel.” Isaka’s about to say something clever, he convinces himself, but he hears Asahina talking to someone on the other side. “Ryuuichirou-sama,” Asahina says meaningfully and he gets it.

“Yeah, yeah,” Isaka says waving his hand in dismissal. And he knows he’s supposed to say something, that there are still these words left to be said. But he can’t get himself to say that, because this feeling, it’s something he just doesn’t do. He will admit, at least, that he is not-pining.

“…Ryuuichirou-sama, um.”

“What?”

There is a pause. “… You can do it.”

And Asahina hangs up.

A few days later, Isaka’s leaning back in his chair, his feet up on the table. He presses the manuscript he’s reading against his face and he’s about to fall asleep again when there is a loud thwack of a ruler hitting against his shins.

“What the--” Isaka sits up properly and sees Asahina standing over him.

“Feet off the table,” Asahina’s looking down at him and maybe he’s smirking a little but there is something in his eyes.

And the feeling of not-pining in Isaka’s stomach dissipates just like that.

Isaka rubs the back of his neck, seemingly irritated, and says, “Jeez, I’m not a kid anymore.”

The life and the noise and everything that is not-pined for is back.

“Ahaha, Isaka-san is like himself again.”

“H-huh?”

“He must have missed Asahina-san that much.”

“Shh! He’ll hear you!”
