“I have to leave soon, Yuki-chan.” Tsumori says one morning, when the sun is shining bright and the twitter of the birds are loud and joyous.

Yukina pauses, only momentarily from eating his breakfast. He swallows what is in his mouth and puts down his spoon. He looks up at Tsumori with such a calm face and says, almost quietly, “Okay.”

For all that is worth, for all the feelings that Tsumori felt when he had to make a choice, Yukina sounds okay, happy and chipper even. Yukina opens his mouth once more -and Tsumori readies himself for all the protests that he will say, for all the tears that would run down his face- and tells him about his life and school and his friends.

Tsumori indulges his younger brother, cherishes the ‘Are you listening to me?’ and ‘Mori-nii-chan’ and his voice and what sounds like home.

And Yukina chokes on his next words. Suddenly, he’s crying.

Tsumori’s out of his chair in mere moments and gathers Yukina in his arms. Yukina clings to him and hugs him tight; he buries his face in his brother’s shirt until his tears soak through. Yukina keeps saying these things that Tsumori can’t understand be he can tell it’s ‘I’ll miss you’ and ‘Mori-nii-chan’ and he’s crying and it sounds like something he’ll miss.

“I won’t go then.” Tsumori says with a smile when he pulls back and looks directly into his younger brother’s eyes. Though there is a glint in his eye, he knows, that says he would really like this opportunity to study overseas and expand his knowledge, but he would rather stay behind than leave his brother crying.

Yukina shakes his head. Says, “No,” so hard, with so much conviction, that Tsumori’s at a lost. “You go away,” he says sniffling, and he faces Tsumori, faces the world, faces the fact that his brother’s going to leave, “but when you get back, you have to be the best doctor in the world.” He smiles and there are tears in his eyes.

After all is said and done, when he’s packed and ready to go, he stands with his parents at the airport. And no, not really, he’s not ready to leave them, to say goodbye. And though he knows it’s only temporary, it feels like he can’t say goodbye to his family, to his home, to his brother.

His mother gives him a kiss on the cheek, she’s tearing up and says she’s so proud of him but she’d still miss him. His father gives him a pat on the back, says he should do his best and work hard, but remember to have fun.

While all this is happening, Yukina just stands to the side, doesn’t say anything until it’s time for Tsumori to leave. He pats Yukina, says see you later and that he’ll sorely miss him, when he walks away, he tries not to cry.

A few more paces forward, and he takes a few more moments to look back at his family. He smiles at them; he raises a hesitant hand to wave goodbye to his family, to his home, and to his brother.

Before he takes another step, he hears Yukina.

“Mori-nii-chan!” Tsumori turns around and he gets an armful of Yukina. “You have to remember our promise, alright?” Yukina says clinging to him.

Tsumori smile, and maybe he’s tearing up just a bit. “Alright,” he says hugging Yukina just that bit tighter. “Of course,” Tsumori says into Yukina’s hair.

And maybe when he leaves, his heart actually feels lighter.

Sometimes –often- it feels like he can’t handle this, that it’s too much, too difficult, he takes out his wallet from his pocket and looks at the picture there. His brother’s smiling up at him, and when Tsumori feels like he can’t smile, seeing Yukina makes him smile.

When he’s tired of his lectures and people telling him what to do, all he needs is a call from Yukina and he’s all right.

And when he thinks he wants to leave, wants to go back home, and just stay there, he looks to the picture on his nightstand of him carrying Yukina when he was a baby, he thinks about their promise.

And when his classmates and friends ask him what’s got him so happy, he shakes his head, says ‘nothing’ fondly and smiles.

No matter the distance
I'm holding your hand

When he gets back, it’s a blur of hugs and kisses. His mother and father are glad to have him back. His mother cries and says she’s missed him so bad. His father says if he’s met anyone worth mentioning with a laugh. Yukina stands behind them and smiles.

Later, when he’s about to sleep, Yukina knocks on his door and enters with a grin.

“So,” Yukina says, and he’s changed so much, but his voice is still the same, still the voice of his younger brother, still something like home, “are you the best doctor in the world yet?” He asks with a grin.

Tsumori smiles and says ‘yes, maybe’ and hugs his Yuki-chan with all his might.
